Real Talk

Why College Moves Are Their Own Beast

College moving isn’t like any other move. The logistics are harder, the timing is tighter, and the stakes feel higher — especially when you’re a parent who drove six hours for this one day.

Dorm Move-In Is Controlled Chaos

Hundreds of families all arriving at the same time. Freight elevator sign-ups that give you 30 minutes before the next family is waiting. Parking a block away because the loading zone is full. Hauling a mattress up four flights of stairs at 2pm in August heat. If you’ve done it once, you know. If you haven’t — trust us, have a plan.

Off-Campus Isn’t Much Easier

Apartment moves might be less chaotic than dorm day, but students usually don’t have the right vehicle and can’t find friends who are both available and willing to haul a couch. Lease-end deadlines are unforgiving. The crew you counted on bails. Suddenly it’s 5pm, half your furniture is still in the old place, and you’re going to lose your deposit.

Parents Need the Day to Go Smoothly

You drove in from Denver, Kansas City, or further. You have one weekend. You want your student settled, the truck returned by 5pm, and maybe a decent meal before you make the long drive back. That doesn’t happen when you’re wrestling a bed frame up a staircase alone. Hire us. Use the time for the goodbye, not the hauling.

What We Do

College Move Situations We Handle Every Day

UCCS Dorm Move-Ins & Move-Outs

We know UCCS move-in weekends and show up prepared. Our crew works fast within tight elevator windows, navigates high-traffic loading zones, and carries everything to the room so you don’t have to. At semester end, we help pack the truck and get your student out before checkout.

Off-Campus Apartment Moves

The bulk of what we do for college students is apartment moves around Colorado Springs. Moving between units at the end of a lease, upgrading to a bigger place, or relocating closer to campus — rent a U-Haul and we’ll take care of the loading and unloading while you handle the logistics.

End-of-Semester Storage Runs

Not going home with everything for the summer? We load your belongings into a rental truck and carry them into your storage unit — organized efficiently so nothing gets damaged over three months and you can actually find things when you come back in the fall.

Furniture Deliveries to Dorms & Apartments

Bought a bed frame, desk, futon, or mini-fridge from Facebook Marketplace and have no way to get it upstairs? That’s a common one. We pick up the item and carry it right to your room — no truck rental required for single-item jobs in many cases.

Parent Drop-Offs

Parents rent a truck, load it up back home, and drive it to Colorado Springs. We meet them at the apartment or dorm, unload every box and piece of furniture, and carry it all in while mom and dad say their goodbyes. It’s the cleanest version of move-in weekend there is.

Single-Item Moves

A couch that needs to go to a new apartment. A loft bed that needs to come out of storage. A dresser that won’t fit in your car. Single-item moves are a staple of the college student experience and we handle them without a fuss.

Save Money

Why Labor-Only Moving Is Perfect for Students

Full-service movers bring a truck, charge you for it, and bill a minimum of $700–$1,000+ before you move a single box. That’s overkill for a dorm room. Labor-only is built for exactly this situation.

You Pay for What You Actually Need

Most students don’t own much — a bed, a desk, some boxes, maybe a futon. A U-Haul cargo van or 10-foot truck is usually more than enough. You pay for 2–3 hours of labor from a professional crew. For a typical dorm or one-bedroom student apartment, total cost often lands between $200 and $350. That’s the whole job.

Split the Work with Your Parents

If parents are flying in or driving from out of state, they can handle the truck — rent it near home, pack it up, and drive it to Colorado Springs. Ballard’s meets them at the destination and handles all the unloading. Everyone does the part they’re best suited for, and the whole day runs in half the time.

Professional Crew, No Strings

No trying to coordinate four friends on the same Saturday. No beer-and-pizza bribes. No one dropping the other end of the couch. Our crew shows up on time, works fast, and doesn’t quit until everything is in place. Your friends stay your friends — just not your movers.

Simple Process

How a College Move Works with Ballard’s

Three steps. No surprises. Designed to be the easiest part of your move-in or move-out weekend.

1

Get a Quote & Lock In Your Date

Text, call, or fill out our quote form. Tell us when you need us, where you’re moving, and roughly how much stuff you have. We’ll confirm your date, give you a straightforward price, and that’s it — you’re booked. No deposits, no paperwork maze.

2

Rent Your Truck (We Help You Size It)

Not sure whether you need a cargo van or a 10-footer? We’ll help you figure it out when you book. You rent a U-Haul, Penske, or Budget truck and pick it up on move day — or we’ll handle the rental for you. We show up ready to work the moment you arrive at the address.

3

We Do the Heavy Lifting

Our crew loads, carries, hauls up the stairs, and places everything where you want it — fast, careful, and professional. Most student moves are done in 2–3 hours. You keep the truck key, return the truck, and your move is done.

Common Questions

What Students & Parents Ask Before Booking

Do you work on UCCS move-in weekend?

Yes. UCCS move-in weekends are some of our busiest days of the year and we know exactly how they run. We arrive prepared for freight elevator windows, limited parking, and the general controlled chaos of move-in day. Book early — those dates fill fast.

I only have a dorm room’s worth of stuff — is that too small a job?

Not at all. Dorm moves and single-room moves are a regular part of what we do. A small load doesn’t mean a small effort — dorm buildings often mean long hallways, slow elevators, and four flights of stairs. We’re built for it, and we’ll give you a fair price that reflects the actual work.

My parents are driving the U-Haul from out of state — can you just help unload when they arrive?

That’s one of our most common college move requests. Your parents drive the truck to Colorado Springs, we meet them at the destination and unload everything into the apartment or dorm. It’s a clean, affordable split: they handle the drive, we handle the heavy lifting.

What if I need to move stuff to a storage unit for summer?

Storage runs are absolutely something we handle. At the end of the semester, we load your belongings into a rental truck and carry them into your storage unit — packed efficiently so everything fits and stays safe over the summer. In the fall, we can help move it all back out too.

How far in advance should I book for move-in day?

For UCCS move-in weekend specifically, 3–4 weeks ahead is ideal — those dates are the first to go. For off-campus apartment moves and end-of-semester storage runs, 1–2 weeks is usually enough. If you’re in a pinch, reach out anyway and we’ll do our best to fit you in.
